Duties: Work study positions to work part-time in the Sleep and Performance Research Center. The center conducts laboratory and field studies of sleep and performance. The laboratory studies involve volunteers living, eating, and sleeping in the center for days to a week or two at a time while undergoing different sleep/wake schedules, being recorded for the psychophysiological parameters of sleep, and taking frequent tests of cognitive performance. Duties in laboratory studies include training and monitoring volunteers, supervising cognitive testing, monitoring psychophysiological sleep recording including placing and checking electrodes, and downloading, reducing, archiving, and analyzing data collected. The field studies involve healthy volunteers going about their normal lives while wearing unobtrusive wrist-worn recording equipment and taking periodic Palm Pilot PDA-based cognitive tests. Duties in field studies include going to work sites to train volunteers, downloading data from individual monitoring and testing equipment and reducing, archiving and analyzing the data recorded. Work study students get experience with carefully controlled biomedical research.
