Description
Dr. Mielke's research interests are in hematology, blood coagulation, osteoporosis and heart disease. He is currently conducting a long-term study dealing with the early detection of heart disease, the Spokane Heart Study. This includes the non-invasive examination of calcium levels in the coronary arteries (calcium acts as a marker of atherosclerosis), cholesterol scores, specific risks for women, and new technology. Recent work includes investigation of an improved test for heparin levels to be used during open heart surgery (published in the Journal of Clinical and Applied Thrombosis and Hemostasis). Other areas of interest include research into the early detection of osteoporosis, molecular biology, HIV/AIDS testing (which includes the only FDA approved rapid HIV test to date), and biotechnology.
