The Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program at
WSU Spokane is designed to provide African Americans, Latinos(a), Native
Americans, and women a broad focus of the numerous opportunities and
careers available in the mathematics, Engineering, and science fields.
MESA accomplishes this through a partnership with Spokane Public
Schools, families and alumni, community organizations, higher education,
industry and business, and government. The Spokane MESA Center provides
opportunities for these
students in grades 7–10 within the Spokane Public Schools district
through the use of exemplary materials and instructional approaches, and
serves as a catalyst and model for educational excellence and equity. Participating
schools include all six high schools (Ferris, Havermale, Lewis & Clark,
North Central, Rogers and Shadle Park) and all six middle schools
(Chase, Garry, Glover, Sacajawea, Salk and Shaw). Approximately 400 students are involved in Spokane MESA each year. Through MESA's activities,
participating students receive educational enrichment experiences and
practical help needed to prepare for university-level studies in a
variety of science and technology related fields. Activities include
SAT workshops, field trips, speakers, competitions, classroom
enrichment activities, and college preparation.
Personalized services are available upon request.
The statewide office of Washington MESA is housed in the
University of Washington's College of Engineering and coordinates
programs in five centers across the state: Seattle, sponsored by the
University of Washington; Tacoma, sponsored by Pacific Lutheran
University; Yakima Valley/Tri-Cities, sponsored by Washington State
University Tri-cities; Southwest, sponsored by Washington State
University Vancouver; and Spokane, co-sponsored by Washington State
University Spokane and Eastern Washington University. Each MESA center is organized as a separate entity serving a
geographic area, with a local advisory board, university sponsors,
center director, MESA coordinators, and MESA teachers.
The Spokane MESA Center offices are housed in the South Campus
Facility on the
Washington State University Spokane campus. Members of the Spokane
MESA advisory board include representatives from Spokane Public
Schools, EWU, WSU, Gonzaga University, and the business community.
