Building the Heart of the Spokane University District
The Riverpoint Campus sits at the heart of the developing University
District. For more information on the vision and conceptual plan, see the
City of Spokane information
site.
At Riverpoint, we have an exciting opportunity before us—one that we believe no other urban campus in the country can match—because we sit on an amazing property:
- Almost 50 acres of prime, relatively undeveloped or underdeveloped land;
- Riverfront property linked to downtown and neighborhoods by the Centennial Trail;
- Immediate adjacency to an urban core undergoing a tremendous renaissance, with a new Convention Center practically touching the edge of the campus;
- A location next to the East Central neighborhood with plenty of underutilized land and buildings ripe for redevelopment;
With easy access to the state’s second largest hospital district, the freeway, an airport only twelve minutes away, the list of assets goes on and on.
WSU envisions that Riverpoint Campus development will:
- Happen on an urban scale—integrated with, complementary to, and expanding a vibrant downtown Spokane;
- Focus on a mix of complementary public and private projects, including some public–private partnerships;
- Create a strong and integrated infrastructure;
- Emphasize partnerships and reciprocity to enhance core programs.
Growth of academic facilities at Riverpoint in the near term will be concentrated north of Spokane Falls Boulevard.
Since the 30 acres of the campus south of Spokane Falls Boulevard will not be needed for near-term academic program growth, WSU expects to pursue market-driven, mixed-use, environmentally sustainable private development of these properties for complementary campus services.
Washington State University is committed to a thoughtful and participatory development process that results in an enhanced campus and community life. The process followed and decisions made will reflect careful stewardship of the public trust, fiscal prudence and appropriate financial return, and best practices in land development, resulting in a high-quality, exciting development project that enhances campus and downtown living.
Our vision is for a metropolitan campus that sets the standard for urban revitalization through higher education community partnerships and targeted investment.
