WSU Vice Provost for Health Sciences
Dr. Brian Pitcher is Chancellor of the Washington State University Spokane campus. He also has university-wide responsibility as WSU’s Vice Provost for Health Sciences, and is Professor of Sociology. His principal area of scholarship and professional publications is demographic, social and organizational change.
As Chancellor of WSU Spokane, he leads the development of the Riverpoint Campus as a multi-institutional metropolitan campus at the heart of the University District, providing an entrepreneurial ecosystem for the people and economy of the greater Spokane region.
As Vice Provost for Health Sciences, he heads a growing academic health center in Spokane that fosters groundbreaking research, interprofessional teaching approaches that are changing the face of education in medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and beyond, and community education efforts to bring the best of WSU’s research to bear on improving human health in urban and rural populations.
Prior to joining WSU in 2005, he was University of Idaho’s provost for seven years and served as acting president of UI in Spring 2003. From 1978 to 1996, Dr. Pitcher served Utah State University as a faculty member and administrator, including five years as dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences.
In Spokane, Brian Pitcher serves Greater Spokane Incorporated as a Trustee, a member of its Executive Committee and Higher Education Leadership Group, and chairs its Health Industry Development Group. He is a member of the Spokane Symphony Board of Trustees, serving on its Governance Committee. He is a member on the Executive Committee of the local Boy Scouts of America organization.
He earned bachelor and master degrees at Brigham Young University and his Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Arizona.
