Pharmacy students get hands-on training

Diabetes awareness, health screenings, asthma awareness education and over-the-counter patient counseling have kept third year Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students hopping lately.

Asthma Awareness to Decrease Absentee Rates

In collaboration with EWU students and with help from the American Lung Association and the Asthma-Friendly School Initiative, WSU Spokane Pharmacy students went to Stevens Elementary four days the last week of March to increase student awareness of asthma in an effort to combat the high absentee rate due to this condition.

Lisa Morse, third year PharmD student, worked with Dan Robison with the Inland Northwest Asthma Coalition (housed in the Area Health Education Center), to create the curriculum for kindergarten through sixth grade students. The goal of the program is to help students develop a better understanding of people in their lives who have asthma and to help mitigate the high absentee rates.

"Spokane Public Schools is taking her curriculum and modifying it to meet their grade appropriate word level and their ELARS requirements,” said Robison. “They will adopt it as a district wide Lung Health Module that will go to each of the 35 elementary schools . . . ready for classes next fall."

Brenda Bray, WSU Spokane pharmaceutical care lab coordinator, reported, “The curriculum seemed to work well -- the students were engaged, participated and were learning new concepts. You (PharmD students) have made a difference in the Spokane community.”

100 Screened through Operation Diabetes

Kristin Allison, Lisa McGuire, John Criswell, Jennifer Blair and Stephanie Matsubara ready to screen patients at Jones Pharmacy. As part of Operation Diabetes, WSU Spokane PharmD students completed three diabetes awareness events the last two weeks of March where they conducted blood pressure, blood glucose and total cholesterol screenings for more than 100 visitors at Jones Pharmacy on the South Hill and at Owl Pharmacy in Cheney.

This project provided experience for student organizers, Lisa McGuire, Stephanie Matsubara, Kristin Allison and Lisa Morse, in how to to coordinate a multi-center, multi-day screening event and to partner with local community pharmacies and help them serve their clients. “They have new skills now to help them plan such events in their future work environments,” said Lisa Woodard, adjunct clinical assistant professor of pharmacotherapy at WSU Spokane.

Students reported the most important and best part about the experience was the opportunity to work directly with the public, spending approximately 10 minutes with each patient during the screenings. The students listened to the patient’s concerns and problems as well as provided them with education.

Those participating in the free event benefited from the screenings and many patients saw this as an opportunity to follow up on a previously diagnosed health problem or to gather more information regarding an area of current health concerns, reported Woodard.

Pharmacists Coach Students in Over-the-Counter Drug Counseling

Students received in-person training from 10 practicing community pharmacists who volunteered to come to the Pharmaceutical Care Lab (a.k.a. PCL) to coach pharmacy students on their over-the-counter patient counseling skills, giving the students the opportunity to practice these skills.

“Many of the participating pharmacists are alums as well as donors, which highlights the strong connection the college maintains with its pharmacy graduates,” said Brenda Bray, WSU Spokane pharmaceutical care lab coordinator. “They are donating their time -- and it is such a great opportunity for our students to connect with practicing pharmacists who are so familiar with patient care.”

These volunteer pharmacists represented the Medicine Shoppe on Northwest Blvd., Sixth Ave. Pharmacy, Jones Pharmacy, Valley Mission Home Care Pharmacy, Target Pharmacies, and Rite Aid Pharmacy. Return to the Top of the Page

Way to go!

“Way to Go” to ASWSUS officers Ryan Rieger, Allen Hullinger and Gayle Bevington, who served lunch at the Union Gospel Mission on Saturday. Even though they are all very busy with end of the year academic projects, they took the time to serve lunch and then eat and visit with the men at the mission. (from Joan Menzies, Director of Student Services).

Kelly LaGrutta continues to impress with her graphic design skills, which she puts to work in service of the Riverpoint Campus Wellness Collaborative. The striking "Super Size Me!" flyers you see on campus are her work. (from Barb Chamberlain, fellow wellness collaborator)

"Way to go" is the place for you to recognize a co-worker's extra effort, outstanding contribution, or all-around good nature that makes your work day go a little more smoothly.

Send your “Way to Go!” comments to Laura Scholtens, scholtens@wsu.edu, and watch for your thanks to be published in an upcoming issue of the Campus Bulletin!Return to the Top of the Page
