Interior design has become a phenomenon. With the advent of the
Home and Garden Channel, “Trading Spaces” and “Extreme Makeover:
Home Edition,” many feel all that is needed is a bucket of paint and
glue gun to make a space beautiful
However, it takes an entire body of knowledge, history and
extensive education to create an environment that addresses people’s
functional and psychological needs to truly grasp the complexities
of the discipline of interior design.
As a relatively new profession, it is only within the last half
of the twentieth century that interior design has received
legislative recognition for its accomplishments, and been able to
distinguish itself from architecture and other design disciplines
that deal with the built environment.
While scholarly publications continue to validate interior design
as a discipline, much is yet to be done to help educate the public
about the complexities of the profession.
One step toward building such a foundation is being undertaken by
professor and department chair Nancy Blossom and
interior design graduate students Ruta Patil and
Kristi Marian at WSU Spokane, in a project funded by the
Interior Design Educators Council.
Blossom and her colleagues are building a historic relational
database on American interior designers in the twentieth century
that will provide a sound base for continued efforts for
professional recognition of interior design.
Blossom says, “If we can develop a relational database that looks
back at the century of interior design, record actual projects, and
their outcomes, as well as look at training paths, design
philosophies and many other things demonstrated by those who worked
in the profession, scholars will have the opportunity to demonstrate
the value that interior designers bring to society by their
contribution in the field.”
Patil is seeking evidence on how and why the specialization
evolved, while Marian has worked on narrowing the field of data to a
group of 200 designers who are listed in the Interior Design Hall of
Fame. She is looking for common indicators such as training,
education, types of projects and publications.
The completion of the database could mean recognition for the
interior design program here at WSU Spokane, Blossom says. “If we
are successful in developing this database and it becomes a tool
that is widely used by professionals and scholars, more people will
be aware of the dynamic work that is being accomplished in our
studios.”
Save the date! The annual campus tradition of starting each
semester with a campuswide gathering continues Thursday, August

Your award-winning Commute Trip Reduction committee is
working their magic again. Check out the services they are offering
you this time!
Campus Cartridge Recycling Program
You CAN Make a Difference and you'll be AMAZED at how easy it is!!!
Your CTR Committee is offering a recycling service for all your
individual printer cartridges. There will be a collection box in
every building on campus. Look for the posters going up this week.
All you have to do is either put your cartridge in a plastic bag
located on the front of the box and drop it in the box, or tear off
the postage paid bag, drop your cartridge in, and put the bag in the
mail. THAT'S IT!!
There are boxes located in the basement and on the third floor of
the Phase I Classroom Building, in the Dental Hygiene area and on
the second floor of the Health Sciences Building, at the main desk
at SIRTI and the main area in the Ad Annex . If you have any
questions about this wonderful ecological service just call either
Cy Parker at 358-2285, or Teresa Kruger at 368-6999.

six times during the month of July and six times during August, and
your name will be entered into a drawing to have coffee delivered to
your office or unit by none other than the above and you will be on
TV!
Coffee is graciously donated by Cravens Coffee, owned by Simon
Thompson. Simply submit your CTR information on your commuting
habits for the months of July and August at www.mycommute.org, as

In the
Campus Bulletin of April 14, 2004, Lisa Breitenfeldt,

original geocache.
Interested in learning about geocaching? We’re collecting a list
of people who would like to spend a lunch hour learning more about
this high-tech activity. Contact Lisa,

years and is currently president of the board. The board oversees
the connections between Spokane and our four Sister Cities: Chechon,
Korea, Jilin, China, Limerick, Ireland, and Nishinomiya, Japan, and
our Friendship City: Lubeck, Germany.

Peterson is also a member of the planning committee that is
arranging for the 2005 Sister Cities International Conference here

officials about the conference.
The 2004 Sister Cities International Conference takes place this

U.S.-China Regional Forum and will be one of several volunteers who
continually host Spokane's booth encouraging people to visit
Spokane, and, of course, attend the 2005 International Conference.
The host city of the next international conference traditionally
presents a reception to show off the city and encourage attendance.
