GET TO KNOW WSU SPOKANE: CRIMINAL JUSTICE

The criminal justice program emphasizes a multidisciplinary, theoretical approach to understanding deviant behavior and crime, the nature of law and social control, the organization and management of criminal justice agencies, and the use of research and evaluation for planned change in criminal justice. The six WSU Spokane criminal justice faculty and staff are committed to both the students and community outreach through research. Open the attached to read more about this academic program, WRICOPS and WSICOP. This fact sheet submitted courtesy of David Brody, assistant professor and program coordinator.

SPRING SEMESTER ALL-CAMPUS KICKOFF MEETING JAN. 9

Mark your calendars for the morning of Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003. We’ll hold an all-campus semester kickoff 9 a.m.-noon (coffee at 8:30 a.m.). Topics to be addressed will include campus safety and security and developments in research and service activities. More information to follow.

HIGHER EDUCATION COORDINATION IN WASHINGTON STATE: DRAFT REPORT

A bill in the 2002 Legislature directed the Washington State Institute for Public Policy to review the mission and operations of the HECB and evaluate its role and practices in policy setting, evaluation, review, and approval of higher education programs and budgets and administration of financial aid programs (ESSB 6387, Section 608[11], Chapter 371, Laws of 2002 [partially vetoed]).  Although this language was vetoed from the 2002 supplemental operating budget, the Institute's Board of Directors directed staff to undertake the study.

The draft report is now available on the Washington State Institute for Public Policy website at http://www.wa.gov/wsipp/education/pdf/HECBReportDEC6.pdf . The draft report will be presented at the December 12, 2002, meeting of the State of Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board.

This report is divided into two parts.  Part I examines stakeholders' views regarding the role and functioning of the HECB.  The in-person and telephone interviews focused on the statutory roles of the HECB and on the external and internal factors that influence the agency's effectiveness.  Part II describes the evolution of higher education coordination in Washington State and the current role and authority of the HECB.  It also examines governance options from other states and an emerging approach to coordinating higher education.

The final report should be available by the year's end. If you have any questions, please contact Jim Mayfield at 360-586-2783 or mayfield@wsipp.wa.gov.

NOTES FROM DEAN’S CABINET

Meeting of Monday, Dec. 9, 2002

SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System): Director of Student Services Joan Menzies shared a handout that will be circulated to students, staff, and faculty to help them understand requirements for the campus to maintain information on international students and visiting faculty under existing and new federal law. Liz West in student services is the designated school official. Federal laws in question affect those with F-1 and J-1 visas. For more information, contact Liz, weste@wsu.edu, 8-7534.

GERs at SFCC: We are near the signature stage on an agreement with Spokane Falls Community College that will help those full-time undergraduate students who need to take courses required for graduation. The agreement will make it seamless for students to enroll in SFCC courses by coming into our student services office, rather than having to apply separately to SFCC. The courses will show up on the student’s WSU transcript as transfer credits. This should be in effect for the spring 2003 semester. Faculty advisors who have students needing specific courses for graduation should refer them to student services.

Faculty governance: This will be the main topic at the Dec. 20 faculty meeting. Development of some kind of local structure has been the subject of a faculty working committee. The WSU Faculty Senate president will attend the Dec. 20 faculty meeting.

Spring semester all-campus kickoff meeting: Discussed content for kickoff meeting to be held Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, 9 a.m.-noon. Agenda to be finalized and distributed next week.
