NOTES FROM DEAN’S CABINET

Meeting of Nov. 12, 2002

Branch System Study Group: The internal study committee chaired by Jim Zuiches, dean of CAHE, submitted a draft set of recommendations on the university's multi-campus system to the provost Friday Nov. 8. A preliminary version of the report was reviewed and discussed. The president may act on the recommendations as early as this December.

New Safety & Security Officer: Betty Bieker was introduced to the members of the dean's cabinet. She served previously with the Mill Creek, WA, police department and with the WSU police force.

Spring semester campuswide kickoff: Discussed question of whether we hold a campuswide kickoff similar to the fall event, and if so, what topics it covers. Possible topics for presentation or discussion include the multi-campus system recommendations, if those are adopted; training sessions on Blackboard (beginner and advanced); workshop by Sue Pfeifer on her role with respect to grants; and safety and risk management.

Requests for additional IT infrastructure: The data network in HSB was designed with the assumption of a certain percentage of "vacancy" (ports in the classroom not in use and not activated at the switch). We are already near capacity. Activating additional ports in classrooms, labs, and offices would require purchase of additional switches. Discussed need for a request process and timeline to be communicated to campus so that people know what types of infrastructure they need to request, and when to request it so it can be budgeted for. The Campus IT Committee chaired by Kerry Brooks will play a key role in helping frame policy on this. That committee has been appointed and should start meeting soon.

Campus Art Committee process: How does it work, and where are we on decisions about use of the Academic Center funds? The committee has met, reviewed artists, narrowed them down, and recommended an artist for selection already. This has happened earlier with this building than with past buildings, in order to allow for involvement of the artist in the building design/construction if needed for the type of installation the artist creates. Questions asked included whether the committee is currently charged with gathering input from the campus community about what types of art people would like to see on campus, and whether they are developing a long-term philosophy to guide art acquisitions.

Capital requests in upcoming legislative session: The Nov. 8 Spokane Journal of Business included an article on the proposed nursing building (http://www.spokanejournal.com/index.php?id=article&sub=1393). A request for $600,000 for predesign of this building is included in WSU's capital budget request for the upcoming session. Top priority capital request for the non-Pullman campuses is construction funds for the WSU Spokane Academic Center, $32.5 million.
