GET TO KNOW WSU SPOKANE
This week’s feature: Master of Engineering Management
Masters of Engineering Management graduates can be found in virtually every sector of the engineering community in Spokane, across the state, and around the world. Find out what the program offers, how it is offered and Spokane companies where MEM grads are working in the attached Word document. Thanks to Hal Rumsey, associate professor, for submitting this week’s fact sheet.
Role & Purpose of Dean's Cabinet: Group discussion on Dean's Cabinet itself. Cabinet serves to provide input to the campus dean and to each other on day-to-day administrative operations of campus. Serves as a sounding board and source of feedback. For those who participate, it allows sharing of information and an opportunity to learn about parts of campus not involved with on a daily basis. It is one conduit of information from the dean to the campus community, via these notes in the Campus Bulletin and via decisions to communicate something formally to campus as a result of input at the meeting. The campus dean will increase use of this meeting to communicate key decisions and issues under discussion. Other groups meeting regularly that also serve the purpose of communicating decisions and information across campus, but which do not necessarily reach everyone, include the Instructional Leadership Council and faculty and staff meetings. Possibility of having a regular meeting of heads of all research, academic, and service units was discussed.
Health plan changes: Open enrollment ends Nov. 30. NO MAILINGS will come to employee homes. It is essential for people to go online to http://www.wa.gov/hca/pebb.htm to understand changes to their plans. Information is also available from the Human Resources office. The employee share of coverage is going up.
Campus activities update:
· Interdisciplinary Design Institute is forming a new advisory board, with Gordon Ruehl as chair; issues discussed at their first meeting include curricular directions, advocacy for the D.Des., increased communications, and a school or college of design. Important to remind people NOT TO USE "IDI" to refer to the Design Institute (for reasons of copyright infringement). For more information: Forster Ndubisi, ndubisi@wsu.edu.
· STAHR: Students Taking Action for Healthcare in Rural and underserved areas is a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional organization coordinated by the AHEC. They recently did a bus tour to the Colville/Republic area, and will be holding a brown-bag lunch every month Nov-April for conversations with community leaders on health care issues such as care for the homeless, minority health care, international developments, etc. Members come from WSU Spokane, EWU, Gonzaga, ICN, and the UW MedEx program. For more information: Steve Meltzer, meltzer@wsu.edu
· Copyright workshop being held Oct. 30.
Administration move: The administrative offices currently in MFC will move to the Riverfront Office Park, which is the building located behind the Schade Tower next to the river. The move will take place sometime week of Nov. 23-Dec. 1. Anticipate that people in those offices (dean's office, budget, communications, and human resources) will NOT have email during that time frame. Phones should continue to be functional. Data service for these offices will improve after the move thanks to the direct connection to campus fiber/copper.
Student update: Bill Gray had the first meeting of the year with the Dean's Student Advisory Group. Their issues include technology (of special concern to design students), WHETS, and use of S&A fees. They are looking at putting together a printed & electronic campus bulletin for students. The dean also met with health sciences students of both EWU and WSU Spokane; the EWU dean of students and director of student affairs for Spokane Center/Riverpoint also attended.
Joint WSU/UW message campaign: The presidents of WSU and UW have been mounting a statewide campaign in a joint effort to tell the legislature that we cannot continue to overenroll while being underfunded by the state--an issue of special concern to the state's two research universities. With the departure of UW Pres. Dick McCormick for Rutgers, those managing the campaign will have to decide how to continue it.
Videostreaming: Current technology available on campus for videostreaming of lectures and other presentations does not allow real-time. Requires pulling WHETS staff away to shoot the presentation, replacing that WHETS staff with time-slip, then webmaster time to digitize and put on web. This was done for the NIH workshop in September, for example. Equipment to allow real-time digital video streamed straight to web would cost approx. $6,000-$8,000. The campus IT committee chaired by Kerry Brooks will be asked to discuss this along with other issues they are to address. Possibility of adding a student to that group was mentioned.

“Globalization is having a major effect on architecture”
In Construction
April 2002
Changes in the world of architecture directly influence the future of the
construction industry. “Architecture I think is in a pretty exciting time
because of the new technology and ideologies,” says David Wang,
associate professor and graduate coordinator, architecture. Not available
online.
In October, David Wang, associate professor, architecture, traveled to Xi'an, China, with WSU's Provost, Robert Bates, and WSU's Director of International Programs, Robert Harder, to sign exchange agreements with two Chinese universities, Xi'an Jiaotong University and Northwest University. Xi'an Jiaotong is one of the top 5 comprehensive universities in China. In May 2003, Wang, along with Mary Wack, Dean of WSU's Honors College, plans on taking 20 WSU students to China for two weeks, made possible in part by these agreements.
During the same visit to China, Joseph Coyne, associate professor, health policy and administration, served as a WSU Delegate Member for a visit to Peking University Health Science Center in Beijing, China. The Delegate’s charter of implementing the terms of a five-year international agreement and amendments with Peking University officials was accomplished during the visit as was a presentation about the WSU-Peking University Transfer Credit Program to the Chief Visa Officer, Mr. Chuck Bennett, of the Beijing Office of the US Embassy. The WSU-Peking University Transfer Credit Program is scheduled to begin in the Fall 2003 semester, when Peking University students will begin their studies in the Health Policy and Administration Department in Spokane.
Coyne is the lead author with co-authors Xiaohui Hou (HPA '02) and Robert Short, research associate, WIMIRT, on a publication about China medical reforms in the peer reviewed Clinical Research and Regulatory Affairs cited as follows: Coyne, Joseph S., Hou, Xiaohui, Short, Robert, Dong, Zhe, and Zhaoxia, Wu, Medical Costs and Utilization Trends in China: Implementing Market and Regulatory Reforms in Clinical Research and Regulatory Affairs 19:4 (2002): pp. 341 350.
Coyne has been invited to present his paper from the January 2002 issue of the American Journal of Public Health on “Comparative Health Systems: Beyond The WHO Report 2000” at the 7th Annual International Summit on Public-Private Partnerships for Health, December 8 through 11, 2002 (see www.ihsummit.com).
