A new initiative to create an outcome-driven model for Spokane Head Start programs has received $800,000 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families. The project will be managed by a partnership of researchers at Washington State University Spokane and the Spokane Head Start program administered by the Community Colleges of Spokane.

In a move that reflects growth at Washington State University Spokane’s Interdisciplinary Design Institute, the new director of WSU’s interior design program will also serve as assistant director of the Institute. Professor Nancy Blossom comes to WSU Spokane from The George Washington University, where she directed the interior design program.

The Washington State University graduate program in Exercise Science completes its move to WSU Spokane this fall with the transfer of associate professor E. Carolyn Johnson from Pullman.

 

“WSU Spokane Announces New Faculty in Speech & Hearing Sciences”

Two faculty joining the graduate program in speech and hearing sciences at Washington State University Spokane bring research expertise in brain mapping and adult dysphagia and motor speech disorders to the graduate program in speech and hearing sciences. Another who will work with students both in Pullman and Spokane brings years of experience as the department’s Native American program coordinator. Mimi Salamat, Ph.D., joins WSU Spokane from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans as an assistant professor. Teresa Paslawski, Ph.D., most recently completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., before coming to WSU Spokane. Dr. Ella Inglebret served as coordinator of the Native American Professional Preparation Program in the WSU Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences for 12 years prior to receiving her Ph.D. in December 2001 and joining the faculty as assistant professor.

 

“Grant to be used in Development of Support Program for Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Patients, Families”

Bruce Becker, M.D., and Dennis Dyck, Ph.D., are recipients of a $450,000 grant to develop a first-of-its-kind support program for people with spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury and their families.

 

David Wang, associate professor and graduate coordinator, architecture, is pleased to announce the signing of a contract for his second book, Sounding Spokane: Perspectives On The Built Environment Of A Regional City 1995-2005. The publisher will be Eastern Washington University Press. This edited book features chapters by several WSU professors, including Douglas Menzies, associate professor, architecture; Matt Melcher, assistant professor, interior design; Ayad Rahmani; and Keith Ballantyne. Other chapters were written by a variety of Spokane civic leaders, designers, and artists. The book is partially funded by the AIA Pacific Northwest Chapter and the City of Spokane Office of Neighborhood Services.

 

Mark Garrison, associate professor, pharmacy, recently returned from an international infectious diseases meeting entitled, "Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy” in San Diego where he provided a slide presentation based on his research, "Pharmacodynamic Activities of Newer Quinolone Agents against S. pneumoniae with Specific Mutations in DNA Gyrase and Topoisomerase IV". Julie Schimmels, research projects coordinator, health research and education center, was also involved in the research.

The Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture is offering free admission for all college students with a valid school ID card from 5 to 8 p.m. MAC is located at the corner of First & Hemlock in Spokane's historic Browne's Addition Neighborhood. There will be music, beverages & refreshments in the Education Center, five wonderful exhibits (visual art, regional history and American Indian), and 1898 Campbell House visits. Held in the Health Sciences Building, room 110A, noon-1 p.m. Brown bag lunch. Open to faculty, staff and students. The speaker, Karl Sonnenberg, from the Portland architectural firm, Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnerships, is an expert in designing healthcare facilities. Wednesday, November 6: WSU Spokane Combined Fund Drive (CFD) Rally
Join your colleagues for a pizza lunch, bake-off and TALENT SHOW from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Phase One Classroom Building Gallery. No admission, just bring your completed CFD contribution form, donations (clothing, food, cleaning supplies) for the Salvation Army Safe Center and/or dollars for your votes for the bake-off and talent show.  Watch for more information. Thursday, November 7: College of Sciences Featured Lecture

New faculty member Lisa Shaffer, Ph.D., Research Professor, WSU Spokane Health Research and Education Center and WSU School of Molecular Biosciences and Co-Director, Cytogenetics Laboratory, Sacred Heart Medical Center, will present “Robertsonian Translocations: Chromosome Behavior and Human Evolution” at 7:00 p.m. in HSB 110. Bridging the Gap: Research & Clinical Practice

This conference will take place at the WestCoast Grand Hotel and features separate concurrent sessions for clinical practice and research. Bridging the Gap sessions will feature national and international speakers on biologics and targeted therapies between concurrent sessions.
