This week’s feature: Facilities Operations
Facilities Operations is in charge of many of the things that we take for granted like a beautiful outdoor campus, safe environment, clean floors, empty garbage cans, and plentiful parking. Find out who keeps your building looking sharp and who to talk to about recycling, campus security or other facilities topics by reading the attached fact sheet, courtesy of Jon Schad, facilities manager.
Linda Loos, principal assistant, cooperative extension; and Jon Schad, facilities manager, facilities operations, were recently recognized with 2002 Staff Excellence Awards.
Linda Loos is the recipient of the classified staff award for the year 2001-2002. Her nominators stated, “the quality of work and innovative problem-solving have provided the recipient with a well-deserved reputation as an effective and productive individual. She successfully juggles multiple responsibilities, coordinating numerous teams, grants, and projects on a statewide basis and tracking several hundred thousand dollars in grants.” Many at WSU Spokane consider her the “resident software expert.” She regularly volunteers to work at important WSU events and is well known for attributes such as expertise, knowledge, and her open, friendly personality. A reference stated Linda is 100% professional--top quality always! She uses humor to lighten the load when things get tense and never hesitates to offer assistance even with her own heavy workload. She is aware of and sensitive to other people’s needs. Another reference stated, “Linda has a long tenure with WSU Spokane, having started with their department, and said, “I cannot believe I let her get away!”
Jon Schad is the recipient of the administrative professional award for the year 2001-2002. One nominator remarked on the stellar service Jon has given to the WSU Spokane, EWU, and SIRTI communities. He has developed exceptional service units with very limited resources through his leadership abilities. Another nominator credited his ability to provide calm and steady leadership as keys to success. His ability to lead staff and encourage teamwork has made it possible to provide a very high level of service to the campus. It was said that his ability to treat everyone fairly and courteously and with respect was key to their success. A reference stated Jon is one of the most capable and competent people he’s ever had the privilege to work with. His ability to resolve challenging issues is appreciated, particularly with regard to the unique nature to the multi-partner campus. Another reference stated Jon is easygoing but has a no-nonsense attitude that really gets things done. He is described as a person of integrity and honesty, one whose contributions to the entire campus and the resulting impacts on the lives of faculty, staff, and students make this individual worthy of this award.
Congratulations, Linda and Jon! Thank you for your excellent service to WSU Spokane!

"WSU (Spokane) Grant Advances Undergraduates"
Terabyte Triangle Newsletter

The leap from regular computing to parallel computing is like the driver of
the Riverfront Park Choo Choo being handed the keys to drive a BNSF locomotive
over the high bridge. Two lucky undergraduate students will be given the
opportunity to make this leap, and be paid for it, next summer--thanks to a
National Science Foundation (NSF) grant. Paul Schimpf, PhD, associate
professor of engineering at WSU Spokane, has received a $12,000 NSF
supplemental grant to support undergraduate students. The grant is to be used
for salaries and will be available next summer, 2003. The undergraduates who
get the summer job will help Schimpf with his research involving parallel
computing.

The preparation program for school superintendents at Washington State

with practical application. When AASA puts out the list of the exemplary
superintendent preparation programs in the United States, WSU is always
included. It is one of the six top schools in the U.S. for preparing
superintendents.”
