Health Care Leaders Group to Discuss Prescription Drugs
at WSU Spokane
Is Hippocrates choking on a pill? That's the question to
be addressed at the May 9 meeting of the Spokane Health Care Leaders Group.
Presenter Bruce Howard, regional account manager for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, will
look at the pathway of prescription drugs as they make their way from the
manufacturer to the consumer. The discussion, scheduled for 5:30-7 p.m., will be
held in room 110C of the Health Sciences Building on WSU Spokane's Riverpoint
campus, 310 N. Riverpoint Blvd. It is free and open to the public.
The
presentation is co-sponsored by the Spokane Regional Chamber of Commerce Health
Care Committee and the department of health policy and administration at
Washington State University Spokane. The Health Care Leaders Group is chaired by
Deb Harper, MD, and Kelli Pearson, DC, and is facilitated by Melissa
Ahern, PhD, associate professor in the department of health policy and
administration at WSU Spokane. Read more online: http://wsunews.wsu.edu/detail.asp?StoryID=2982
The UPCD Clinic was featured on KHQ’s 4:30 and 6
p.m. newscasts, Monday, April 22. The coverage was used to promote the upcoming
Friday and Saturday free hearing screenings for children at the Valley and
Northtown malls. See events section for more information.
NOTEWORTHY
Winsor Schmidt, professor and chair, health policy
and administration, co-presented a paper, "The Olmstead Challenge for Public
Administration: A Case Analysis of Plan Development," at the American Society
for Public Administration's 63rd National Conference, March 25, 2002, Phoenix,
Arizona.
David Wang, associate professor of architecture, received
invitations to give lectures at four Chinese universities: Shenzhen University
School of Architecture, Tianjin University School of Architecture and the Xi'an
Jiaotong University School of Architecture (jointly with the Xi'an University of
Architecture and Technology). The topic, "Design in Relation to Research," is
based on one of the chapters from Wang’s recent book.
Wang was an
invited participant in a National AIA (American Institute of Architects)
Knowledge Summit held in San Diego April 8-9. The Knowledge Summit was a
gathering of key national AIA people to envision the future of the AIA. Wang was
there representing the "research" component of the discussion, because of his
connections with the AIA-PIA (Professional Interest Area) network and his
proposal for 23 PIA’s to use one “research template”.
Xiaohui
(Dorothy) Hou, health policy and administration student graduating this May,
received first prize in the Social & Administration section of the WSU Wiley
Exposition.
Fourth year landscape architecture design students
will present their final projects to the director and board members of the
Morning Star Boy's Ranch. The student researched and refined unique proposals
for developing the MSBR existing 226-acre site. Projects included providing
additional housing, educational opportunities and amenities for the resident
boys, space for community activities, preserving existing wetlands and forest
areas, and recommending new revenue generating business opportunities.
Presentation is set for Wednesday, May 1, 3-5 p.m., Phase I Classroom Bldg, Rm.
148
This spring fourth year landscape architecture design students
focused their attention on the connection between the WSU Spokane Riverpoint
campus and the adjacent eight blocks of East Sprague Avenue directly south of
the campus. The students proposed creating an urban university district
atmosphere along the East Sprague Avenue from Division Street to Hatch Road by
revitalizing the corridor with off-campus student housing and amenities such as
restaurants and small-scale retail shops. The project will be presented to
representatives of the business community, Spokane City Council, WSU Spokane,
and Gonzaga University. Presentation is set for Monday, May 6, 3-6 p.m., Phase I
Classroom Bldg, Rm. 148

NEW WEB LOOK BEGINNING TO TAKE
SHAPE
Redesign of the WSU
Spokane web site is under way and will continue over the course of the summer
until all pages have been brought into the new design look.
Academic
program pages are highest priority for redesign. Academic coordinators, Student
Services, and Communications are coordinating efforts to rewrite and redesign
these pages. Communications will be in touch with other units about redesign and
content updates.
For a test drive, see the News & Events section
online: http://www.spokane.wsu.edu/News&Events/index.asp. Mouse around a little and send any feedback on content
and organization to Barb Chamberlain, chamberlain@wsu.edu. Send comments on web site performance (e.g. bad links,
load time on graphics) to Sicco Rood, rood@wsu.edu

Spokane” and when to use “WSU Spokane”? Check out the online style guide at

HOW TO WRITE OP-ED PIECES
“Developing Successful Op-Ed Pieces” will be held at WSU
Pullman May 7 from 9-11 in the Sam Smith Center for Undergraduate Education
(CUE), Rm. 316, and 1-3 in CUE 207.
Ross Anderson will lead the
sessions. He spent five years on the Seattle Times editorial board, and has led
similar sessions at the UW, talking to faculty about how to write an effective
op-ed.
Anderson understands why many in academia are frustrated with
seeing academic research or issues distorted in the popular press, and one way
around that is to write it themselves. Every newspaper in America has an op-ed
page, and his experience suggests that those in academia don't make very good
use of that platform.
He will come with a few examples of effective
op-eds from academics, and some anonymous examples of ineffective efforts. He'll
walk through some basic do's and don'ts dealing with timing, length, voice,
vocabulary, etc.
Please let Barb Chamberlain, 8-7527, chamberlain@wsu.edu
know if you’ll be attending this session, or if you would be interested in
similar training held on our campus.
