GET TO KNOW WSU SPOKANE

This week’s department overview feature: WSU Spokane MESA Center
(Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement)

Highlights
Washington MESA was founded in 1982 at the University of Washington. The Spokane MESA Center was founded in 1989. The Spokane Center serves approximately 400 students each year in the MESA classes at the 8th, 9th and 10th grade levels, both in middle and high schools.

The Spokane MESA Center provides hands-on, interactive enhancements to the existing school science and math curricula in designated MESA classrooms by scheduling speakers from the community, organizing field trips to area businesses and colleges and providing math and science-based activities.

Accomplishments
The Center now serves over 400 students annually at all six middle schools and all five high schools in School District 81. From 1998-99 senior surveys, out of 65 MESA students surveyed and 36 returning the survey, 89% (32) indicated that they will be attending a higher education institution and 47% (15) indicated wanting to enter a math, science or technology major in college. The students’ college choices include Spokane Falls Community College, Spokane Community College, Washington State University, University of Washington, Eastern Washington University and others throughout the state.

Mission
To assist Washington State and the nation in achieving an educated citizenry that is globally competitive and individually competent in mathematics, engineering and science, with full participation of African American, Hispanic, Native American and women.  MESA accomplishes this through a partnership of higher education, school districts, business and industry and community organizations.

Plans
To continue to seek funding at the state and local level to support student centered activities; to expand the program to serve elementary students.
