GET TO KNOW WSU
SPOKANE
This week’s department
overview feature: Athletic Foundation (Formerly Cougar
Club)
Highlights
WSU Spokane
houses a regional office of the WSU Athletic Foundation (formerly referred to as
the Spokane Cougar Club). The Athletic Foundation serves as the
fundraising arm of the WSU Athletic Department. There are nine full-time
employees in the Athletic Foundation office: Five are located in Pullman,
two in Seattle, and one in Vancouver. Lori Olson, Event
Coordinator, is the only staff person housed in Spokane.
Lori designs,
implements and evaluates all events hosted by the Athletic Foundation in Eastern
Washington. Rueben Mayes, Director of the Athletic Foundation,
coordinates all the annual fundraising for the Athletic Foundation and is
specifically charged with raising annual funds for all of Eastern Washington.
Brady Crook, Associate Athletics Director for Development, is charged
with the oversight of the Athletic Foundation and all major gift fundraising,
including the greater Spokane area.
The AF strives to provide the
resources necessary for the more than 475 student-athletes of Washington State
University to compete athletically and academically.
Through the
experience of athletic competition and academic excellence, it is the goal of
all those contributing to the Athletic Foundation through their donations and
volunteer efforts to help prepare the young men and women of Cougar Athletics
for a leadership role in society when their competitive days are
exhausted. The primary function of the Spokane office is to facilitate
special events and cultivate donors in Eastern Washington. Information and
assistance is supplied to the general public on a variety of athletics issues
such as tickets to sporting events, posters, bus transportation to Pullman,
schedules, etc.
Several special events are held throughout the year in
Spokane and nearby communities. These events are held to help identify,
recruit, cultivate and steward alumni and friends so that the foundation of
support for the Athletic Department continues to expand.
Examples of
special events organized through the Spokane Athletic Foundation office
include:

Accomplishments
In the last fiscal
year, the Athletic Foundation raised over $1.77 million for student athlete
scholarships, and the goal this year is $2.1 million. The Athletic Foundation is
also working to raise $1.797 million in cash and pledges to complete the Indoor
Practice Facility in Pullman.
Plans
Ongoing plans for the
Spokane area are expanding our donor and volunteer bases with help from the
Spokane Cougar Club Development Council and the Spokane Cougar Club Board.
The local Athletic Foundation office will be moving to the Spokane Bookie
location by the end of March.
List of Community Partners
The
Athletic Foundation partners with several local businesses as major sponsors and
hosts for special events. Sterling Savings Bank, Bank of America, Bank of
Whitman, ICM Asset Management Corporation, Washington Trust Bank, Hotel Lusso,
WestCoast Grand Hospitality and Nordstrom have all been significant contributors
to the Athletic Foundation's mission. In addition, several businesses
donate services and products to the Fall Sports Banquet and serve as whole
sponsors for our golf tournaments.
For special events questions, contact
Lori Olson, (509) 358-7541, or olsonl@wsu.edu.
