GET TO KNOW WSU SPOKANE
This week’s department overview feature: Health Research and Education Center

The Health Research and Education Center (HREC) fosters the improvement of human health and facilitates economic development of the region by fostering basic and applied research, technology transfer, and educational programs in the biomedical and social health arenas. The HREC serves as an important link between researchers from the university, the Spokane health care community, and funding sources.  HREC activities encompass the basic health sciences as well as diverse specialized areas including: patient outcome research, cardiology, mental health, clinical pharmacology, male reproductive physiology, hematology, diabetes, exercise physiology and cell biology.  A special feature of the HREC is the Health Sciences Building’s biomedical research laboratory system, encompassing over 11,000 square feet of state-of-the-art labs and research equipment.

The HREC also provides technical assistance in the following areas: research design, literature searches, funding source identification, grant application, data management, statistical consultation, coordination of human subjects review, professional liaison with medical center and clinical-biomedical researchers, access to clinical populations, and manuscript preparation.

As part of its education mission, the HREC dedicates resources to the development and presentation of a wide range of public and professional education conferences and curricula.  The HREC also sponsors WSU Spokane CityLab, a state-of-the-art laboratory learning center offering elementary and secondary teachers and students enrichment experiences in biotechnology and the biosciences.

For more on HREC projects, including the Spokane Heart Study, WSU Spokane CityLab (
www.spokanecitylab.wsu.edu), male reproductive physiology research, and research in exercise science and the immune system, see the attached to read in detail about HREC’s accomplishments, as well as their plans to work with Spokane’s health care industry to evaluate the need for a medical research institute.

MEDIA COVERAGE

KREM, KXLY, FOX and the Spokesman-Review all ran stories on the first day of the semester for WSU Spokane students and the brand new, state-of-the-art Health Sciences Building on Monday, January 14, 2002. Bill Gray was featured on KREM’s noon broadcast in a live interview from the HSB with anchor Robyn Nance. The Spokesman article, “Breathing Room,” covering Speech & Hearing Sciences and their new clinical space can be viewed at http://www.spokesmanreview.com/news-story.asp?date=011502&ID=s1085100, Jeff Nye and Leslie Power were both quoted in the article and Sandy Bassett was pictured. This coverage was generated by a press release and follow-up.

Janet Beary was quoted in the article, “The Web Diet,” in the Spokesman-Review on January 14, 2002. Beary reminded consumers to carefully evaluate web sites offering weight-loss diets and suggested guidelines for evaluation.

David Brody, assistant professor, criminal justice, WSU Spokane, was quoted in an article in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on January 13 on jury behavior in the "Texas Seven" trial. Brody has studied jury behavior. Visit http://web.star-telegram.com/content/fortworth/2002/01/13/nenews/fw031513-0113-BB001-courts.htm?template=aprint.htm for the entire story. (This coverage resulted from a response to a ProfNet query. David agreed to be pitched as a resource, Communications compiled and sent the information on him, and the reporter selected him as a source. ProfNet continues to be a productive way of getting media coverage outside the immediate vicinity, sometimes in national publications, or in stories that get picked up on the AP wire and go nationwide.)
