From the December 2001 issue of the Terabyte Triangle newsletter in an article by Billie Moreland: WSU Spokane Students Produce Designs for Mini Community. Three student teams from WSU Spokane’s Interdisciplinary Design Institute created alternative design concepts for a public place in the Terabyte Triangle. The design concepts were for the area now occupied by the vacant Lamonts and J.J. Newberry stores on Riverside between Wall and Howard. The students, from architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture, went beyond just designing a new public square. “They also made recommendation to include other uses such as housing, office, and service retail,” said Doug Menzies, WSU Spokane associate professor of architecture. Their designs include the entire area from the Riverpoint campus through the downtown core. The designs were prepared in response to the 1999 report “Charting the Future: The Plan for a New Downtown”. The report called for a new public square that would serve as a “ceremonial place” for public events and informal gatherings. The completed designs were presented on Wednesday, December 19, to the Downtown Spokane Partnership Board. Drawings and models of the student work will be displayed in the Terabyte Triangle at an as yet undetermined place. Downtown Spokane Ventures plans to make a CD of the student work for distribution to community leaders. Mayor's Opportunity Council on Poverty: Barb Chamberlain, director of communications and public affairs, serves on the Mayor's Opportunity Council on Prosperity communications committee. The committee is forming a speaker's bureau that will be available to hit civic group meetings to raise awareness of poverty in the region and the One Spokane Summit scheduled for May 2002 at Whitworth.
The idea is for someone official (like the Mayor or Don Higgins or a professor involved in relevant research) to attend these meetings along with a social service client or someone currently in poverty to provide both perspectives.
Speakers will be given talking points about the MOCOP initiative, research findings, etc., but mostly would be there to speak from whatever angle you already know. If you agree, you will be added to the speakers' bureau list. If you never get called or can't coordinate an opportunity with your schedule, that's fine--we just appreciate your availability.
Any faculty or administrators with connections to this issue who are willing to participate in the speakers' bureau should contact Barb, 8-7527, chamberlain@wsu.edu, before January 11. Already volunteered: Roy Harrington, director, Safe Start Initiative.
