2001 STAFF EXCELLENCE
AWARDS
Vivian Knapp and Diana
Wick were honored with Staff Excellence Awards at the annual faculty/staff
orientation on August 23 in recognition of their outstanding
contributions to the campus.
Diane Wick, human resources manager for WSU
Spokane, received the Administrative/Professional Staff Excellence Award. Wick
has been with WSU Spokane since 1994, and worked previously for WSU’s
Cooperative Extension in Yakima County. Her background includes 8 years as the
human resources professional for Yakima County government.
Wick is a
member of the Society for Human Resource Management and the Northwest Human
Resource Management Association. She has represented the branch campuses on the
WSU President’s Commission on the Status of Women, and is now the chair-elect of
that group. She also serves on the WSU Temporary Employment System
committee.
Campus dean and executive officer Bill Gray, in making the
presentation, cited Wick’s “quiet competence” and her ability to bring out the
best in her co-workers. Her nominators describe her as caring, direct, honest,
and a skilled coach who helps others think through how best to handle a
situation.
Vivian Knapp, custodian, received the Classified Staff
Excellence Award. Co-workers praised the pride she takes in her work and her
dedication to service. Jon Schad, facilities manager and Knapp’s supervisor,
says that Knapp often requests a change in her work schedule to accommodate
users of campus facilities. Gray, in making the presentation to Knapp, thanked
her for her “meticulous attention to the quality and detail of her
work.”
Knapp has been with WSU Spokane since 1999. However, she was
actually one of the first employees on the Riverpoint campus, having worked for
the Community Colleges of Spokane in the Spokane Intercollegiate Research and
Technology Institute, the first building constructed at Riverpoint. She has
extensive service in higher education, having worked with the University of
Idaho as well as CCS.
The WSU Spokane Employee Excellence Award is
sponsored by PEMCO Insurance and carries a $1,000 award. Recipients are
nominated by co-workers and are chosen for their quality of work, contribution
to work environment, and contributions to the larger
community.

SHORTAGE OF WSU TODAY NEWSPAPERS--PLEASE SHARE!
Robert Frank, editor, WSU Today
The
first edition of WSU Today for this academic year was mailed to faculty
and staff on Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately, the university received
about 390 issues less than it requested and needs.
The shortage was not
discovered until all the issues targeted for the Pullman campus had been sent
out. As a result, the shortage will primarily affect branch campuses and
satellite sites. Faculty and staff working off campus are encouraged to
share their issues with others in their work area.
If you have a computer
that's connected to the internet, please go to http://www.wsu.edu/nis/wsutoday.html, where many articles
from WSU Today are posted.
Or, you can click on the "PDF" file link and view
the entire publication as it was printed with color photos!
We apologize
for the inconvenience and hope you enjoy this issue. Please notice the new
layout and design. We are still working out a few bugs, but are hopeful that it
better meets readers needs. It will continue to improve as time goes
on.
TIP
SHEET
Each week, the WSU News
Bureau puts out a "tip sheet" with story ideas that draw on faculty expertise.
These are sent to reporters statewide and frequently result in news coverage in
print, radio, TV, and web media outlets.
We submit tips for WSU Spokane
faculty on a regular basis and have been very successful in generating media
coverage. In compiling them, we start both from faculty research that might make
a newsworthy story, and stories already in the news for which we have an expert
who can comment.
We'll share our tips internally as well, via the
Bulletin, so you all get to see some of our faculty expertise. The full tip
sheets, including faculty expertise from across the University, are available
online at http://www.wsu.edu/NIS/Tips.html.
Tip Sheet week
of August 27:
Judicial evaluations: How do we judge the judges? A
pilot study is asking attorneys, witnesses and jurors to assess the
professionalism, administration, communication, legal ability and integrity of a
number of volunteer superior court judges from across the state, with results
due in mid-October. WSU criminal justice scholar David Brody says other
states now operate such programs, which are designed to provide judges
information for self-improvement and, perhaps more importantly, information to
the public for use when voting in judicial elections. Contact Brody,
509/358-7952, brody@wsu.edu, or Barb Chamberlain, 509/358-7527,
chamberlain@wsu.edu.
Overtraining and immune system risks: Athletes, in
their quest to perform better, push the limits of training and sometimes do too
much. Overtraining can leave an athlete more susceptible to illness. Two WSU
Spokane researchers are investigating whether glutamine supplementation can
prevent some immune system changes caused by overtraining. If it can, it would
provide evidence that low blood glutamine concentrations may play a role in an
overtrained athlete's increased risk of infection. Contact Jim Krieger,
509/332-0761, jkrieger@wsu.edu, Sally Blank, 509/358-7633,
seblank@wsu.edu, or Barb Chamberlain, 509/358-7527, chamberlain@wsu.edu. (NOTE:
Jim Krieger is a graduate student in the program.)
Tip Sheet week of
August 20:
Pregnant substance abusers: Substance abuse by pregnant
women -- a criminal issue or a public health dilemma? Between 350,000 and
739,000 infants are born each year having been exposed to drugs or alcohol in
utero. A WSU Spokane researcher says criminal prosecutions of pregnant women are
primarily unsuccessful, but government policies could be restructured to address
the underlying substance-abuse problem as a health issue. Such an approach would
help both the woman and the developing fetus while respecting the woman's civil
liberties and patient confidentiality. Contact David Brody, 509/358-7952,
brody@wsu.edu, or Barb Chamberlain, 509/358-7527,
chamberlain@wsu.edu.
Tip Sheet week of August 13:
Attention
deficit disorder: Does your child really have attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder, or might his or her listening problems stem from a related problem
known as auditory processing disorder? Gail Chermak, a leading WSU
researcher on the problem, says that children may indeed suffer from one or both
disorders, or they may be misdiagnosed as having one disorder based on similar
symptoms shared by the two. In fact, attention (listening) problems and
associated academic problems characterize both APD and ADHD. She has
recommendations for parents on signs they should look for themselves and
questions they should ask someone who is diagnosing their child. Contact Chermak
at 509/335-4526, chermak@wsu.edu, or Barb Chamberlain, director of
communications and public affairs at WSU Spokane, 509/358-7527,
chamberlain@wsu.edu.
Measuring teamwork: Everyone talks about teamwork,
but how do you know it's working? How are effective teams managed, and how is
successful teamwork measured? Martin Hoegl, assistant professor of
management and coordinator of the master of technology management program at WSU
Spokane, says teamwork is a major driver of successful projects and largely a
result of competent team design and leadership. Contact Hoegl, 509/358-7769,
hoegl@wsu.edu, or Barb Chamberlain, 509/358-7527,
chamberlain@wsu.edu.
