UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY

Come join us on Saturday, August 18 in Liberty Park for a day filled with games, arts & crafts, entertainment, food, giveaways/prizes, and guest speakers from a variety of cultural backgrounds. This year's theme is "Equity in Education".   The event begins at 10:00 a.m. and wraps-up at 6:00 p.m.  Be sure to stop by and visit the WSU Spokane booth as we will be handing out all kinds of fun goodies. Unity in the Community is an annual, family-oriented event that emphasizes Spokane's growth in valuing and embracing diversity and is aimed at helping children succeed in their education. Please join WSU Spokane as we partner with the community to celebrate diversity in Spokane.

ALL FACULTY/STAFF ORIENTATION

Mark your calendars for the 2001 All Faculty/Staff Orientation on Thursday, August 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Health Sciences Building. The day will kick-off with coffee and pastries served at 8:30 a.m., with the orientation beginning at 9:00 a.m. A barbecue lunch will be provided. During the scheduled lunchtime, a photographer will be on hand for faculty/staff photos. The orientation will conclude no later than 3:30 p.m. New WSU Spokane denim shirts will be on display throughout the day, so bring your checkbook to pre-pay for your order. Dean Gray will e-mail all WSU Spokane faculty and staff more information about the orientation next week. Stay Posted! We hope to see everyone there!

FACULTY/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHS

It's time to update faculty and staff pictures. The Communications Department has inventoried the faculty/staff picture files and found several from 1996 that need to be updated. Bring a blazer and your best professional face to the All Faculty/Staff Orientation on Thursday, August 23 to update your professional picture. We make these photos available any time you need them for professional publications, presentations, and media coverage. They're also used on the web site,  http://www.photoboard.spokane.wsu.edu, and in our photoboard to help our students and your co-workers get to know you better. Prints are available to you at cost.

WSU SPOKANE DENIM SHIRTS

The WSU Spokane Communications Department is taking orders for the new WSU Spokane denim shirt. It is a lightweight, long-sleeve denim shirt with a left breast pocket (no flap) and buttons down. The new WSU Spokane signature logo is featured in two colors centered above the left pocket. The new denim shirt will be displayed at the All Faculty/Staff Orientation on Thursday, August 23. Order envelopes will be available at the display for pre-orders. Orders can be placed now, at orientation, or after orientation. Orders need to be placed by August 29 to Joyce Harbison at 358-7540 or harbison@wsu.edu . If you are in the MFC building, feel free to stop by the Communications Department on the first floor to see the shirt, try it on and place your order.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ORIENTATION

New international graduate students are arriving this fall from Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, and India. A variety of informational and social events are planned for the week of August 20 to help them become acquainted with the WSU Spokane and Spokane communities including a welcome potluck, campus tour, Live After 5, and WSU Spokane Family Night with the Spokane Indians. Continuing international students have been active in planning and leading these activities. A special thank you is extended to Ginger Vietzke, Sandie Kruse, and Norene Phillipson for hosting some of these students as they arrive in a new country. STUDENT ORIENTATION

Students new to WSU Spokane are invited to Orientation on Sunday, August 26, at 4:00 p.m. at the WSU Spokane Riverpoint Campus Phase I Classroom Building Auditorium. All WSU Spokane students will meet key faculty, staff and student leaders; receive orientation packet and student handbook; learn about support services - career services, health and counseling services, computer labs and library; and learn about ASWSU and extracurricular activities, including free fitness facility access. At 5:00 p.m., students will meet with their departmental faculty and classmates. Tasty Ferdinand's ice cream and other snacks will be provided. LIVE AFTER 5 OLDIES NIGHT

The Thursday, August 23, Live After 5 theme is Oldies Night.  Hot Rod Deluxe will rock the town on the WSU Spokane stage located at Riverside and Washington across from the Paulsen Building. Then walk through The National Hot Rod Association Car Show on Riverside Avenue to see the Dead Edsels play on Main Stage from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Wall and Main. Come join the fun and visit the WSU Spokane booth on Riverside and Wall. If you would like to volunteer for this event and receive a WSU Spokane t-shirt, at 358-7528 or . WSU Spokane is pleased to partner with the Downtown Spokane Partnership as a headliner sponsor for this year s Live After 5 season in keeping with our identity as an urban campus and as a part of the Spokane community.

MEDIA COVERAGE
David Brody, assistant professor of criminal justice, was recently quoted in an Associated Press online article, "The Dog Ate My Summons - Judges Turn to Fines, Jail Time for Jury Duty Scofflaws", by Joann Loviglio from Philadelphia.

Design-Build Magazine (August 2001) highlights the current thesis survey by design-build management graduate student Leandra Thompson. They have also provided a link to her survey. See the following link for the article that appeared in the hard copy of the magazine,

The web site, www.construction.com, has a link under "New On Our Sites" to the article that Design Build Magazine (June 2001) did on the graduate program in design-build management under "A New Executive Track Program": Washington State University focuses on design-build management as part of its Master of Science in Architecture program. A handful of pioneering students discusses their reasons for undertaking the venture and their reactions to the program to date.

Sicco Rood submitted the WSU Spokane web page as a case study to the Microsoft FrontPage Bulletin. The site is now featured in a write-up at http://www.microsoft.com/resources/casestudies/CaseStudy.asp?CaseStudyID=11920.

NOTEWORTHY

Danial E. Baker, professor of pharmacy practice, received the following two Meritorious Service Awards at the Pacific Northwest Division Convention in Twin Falls, Idaho, on August 11, 2001:

The National Appointment is awarded to an individual who has demonstrated leadership, good character, diplomacy, a positive attitude, good judgment, unusual qualities of patrolling ability, a genuine desire to serve the skiing public, and extraordinary service to the National Ski Patrol. Qualifications for the National Appointment within the National Ski Patrol are:
1. Served a minimum of eight ski seasons (with a minimum of one year as a senior) as an active member of the National Ski Patrol;
2. Demonstrated leadership that benefits the NSP by (a) serving beyond the patrol level, or (b) serving two or more ski seasons as a certified instructor in a program that is beneficial to the NSP, or by (c) demonstrating exceptional performance as a patrol director;
3. Demonstrated leadership abilities in working with the skiing public as related to skier safety education; and
4. Never received an appointment before.

The Silver Merit Star is awarded annually to the runner-up to the National Outstanding Instructor. Dr. Baker has been a member of the National Ski Patrol at 49 Degrees North since 1993 and a faculty member at Washington State University College of Pharmacy since 1983.  Within the National Ski Patrol he current holds the following positions:  Pacific Northwest Division Assistant Outdoor Emergency Care Supervisor; Inland Empire Region Outdoor Emergency Care Administrator; Instructor Development Course Instructor; Outdoor Emergency Care Instructor; Outdoor Emergency.

Joanna Ellington, director of biomedical development, will speak at the Spokane Regional Chamber of Commerce Health Care Industry Economic Forecast on September 7.

August 24: WSU Spokane Night with the Spokane Indians. Gates open 5:30 p.m., game time 6:30 p.m. Tickets $3. Reserved block of bench seats. 50-cent hot dogs, sodas, and ice cream sandwiches. Wear your crimson and gray and cheer on the Indians with WSU families and friends as they play the Boise Hawks. Reserve your tickets by calling 535-2922 (ask for Jonathan) or mail or fax the "WSU Spokane Night with the Spokane Indians" flyer you received in your mailbox with a check or credit card information.
August 27: When the Stars Come Out. Plan to attend the Spokane Cougar Club Fall Sports Banquet, at 5:30 p.m., WestCoast Grand Hotel in Spokane. Dinner, raffle, loud and silent auctions, coaches, and special guests. You do not have to be a member of Cougar Club to attend. Cost is $43 per person. Reservations may be made to Lori Olson, 358-7541 or olsonl@wsu.edu no later than August 20.
August 28, 29, 30, and 31: Fifth Annual Design & Construction Charrette at the Interdisciplinary Design Institute.

October 5: Live After 5 Visual Arts Tour. Pick up an Inlander the week before for an event map. The music of Trailer Park Girls, Canned Music, Lindell Reason, and Spokane's favorite local band, Delbert, will fill the night air. Rally in the Alley will wrap-up the evening and this year's Live After 5 event season. WSU Spokane is pleased to partner with the Downtown Spokane Partnership as a headliner sponsor for this year's Live After 5 season in keeping with our identity as an urban campus and as a part of the Spokane community.
