CAREER CONTACT AND ALUMNI NETWORK
Ronda McLean, WSU Internship Coordinator and Career
Counselor
The WSU Alumni Association and Career Services invite
you to join the Career Contact and Alumni Network. The Career Contact and Alumni
Network is a web-based mentor program that allows WSU students and alumni to
connect with Cougars working in their field of study. At this time, we are
building our database of mentors before promoting the program to students. WSU
Employees have a broad range of experience and skills and are invited to share
those by participating in this program.
Academic departments are
encouraged to promote this program in their correspondence with alumni. For more
information, contact Greg Henion at 335-6904 or henion@mail.wsu.edu.

WOMEN’S MENTORING AND LEADERSHIP
EXCHANGE PROGRAM
Nominations are
requested for faculty/staff women to participate in the Mentoring and Leadership
Exchange Program developed by the Women in Higher Education Roundtable. The
partners in this program are the colleges and universities of the Inland
Northwest.
Through the program, women faculty and professional/exempt
staff with leadership potential have the opportunity to spend time with
senior-level college and university officials, gaining a deeper understanding of
higher education leadership and issues.
Washington State University will
nominate four mentees and four mentors to participate in the program during the
2001-2002 academic year.
Please email the names of mentee and/or mentor
nominees to Kathy Zeches at zechesk@wsu.edu , by Monday May 21. Self-nominations
may be made. President Rawlins will make the final nominations for Washington
State University.
For additional information or questions, please
contact the Women's Resource Center at 335-6849.
LAND USE EXPERT TO EXPLORE ALTERNATIVES
TO SPRAWL IN SPOKANE-COEUR D'ALENE CORRIDOR
SPOKANE--Resource Efficient Building and Remodeling
Council, (REBAR), has joined with several other organizations to bring a
workshop called "Conservation Subdivision: Alternatives to Sprawl" to Coeur
d'Alene and Spokane, May 14-16. REBAR is a nonprofit association of
environmentally conscientious architects, builders and vendors.
"Land
development at Spokane's urban fringe and in the booming Rathdrum Prairie of
North Idaho under emerging land use plans calls for new solutions from
landowners and developers, not just land use planners and politicians," said
REBAR spokesman Jim Wavada.
Nationally respected land use consultant
Randall Arendt will show developers and landowners, planners and community
members how to combine residential development with environmental ethics on the
following dates:
Monday, May 14, 1 - 4 p.m. in Coeur d'Alene, at the
Kootenai County Public Building, Room 1, 501 Government Way.
Tuesday, May 15,
4:30-6 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. (split session) in Spokane, at the Shiloh Hotel, 923
E. Third Ave.
.
Arendt specializes in turning the traditional large-lot
urban fringe development process onto its head. The result is very livable
communities that preserve wildlife corridors, scenic vistas, watersheds and
other open space that otherwise might have been sacrificed to mathematical
calculations of allowed density.
"I've attended this workshop; I've seen
the 'lights go on, the 'aha' experience of the landowners and developers in the
room," Wavada said, "The opportunities for mutual benefit are amazing when you
move out of traditional patterns of thinking about land
development."
Arendt combines a common sense message that recognizes the
public's support for preservation of our remaining open spaces with a practical
methodology that allows landowners and developers to turn a profit on their land
and deal with down-zoning issues.
A $50 registration fee is required for
the Coeur d'Alene workshop. Contact Jan Gera, at (208) 769-4414 or by e-mail at
jgera@co.kootenai.id.us. The Spokane workshop is free, but there is a $22
charge for dinner during the split session. To register for this workshop,
contact Jim Wavada, (509) 456-3150, or e-mail at
jwav461@ecy.wa.gov <mailto:jwav461@ecy.wa.gov>. Registration is on a
space-available basis, so please register early.
REBAR Council
co-sponsors for Arendt's workshops and consultations are: Greenstone
Corporation, Northern Rockies Corporation, Spokane Home Builders Association,
Northwest EcoBuilding Guild, North Idaho Building Industry Association, Rathdrum
Prairie Steering Committee, WSU's Interdisciplinary Design Institute
<www.idi.spokane.wsu.edu>, American Institute of
Architects-Spokane Chapter, American Planning Association-Inland Northwest
Chapter, EWU's Department of Urban and Regional Planning and the Washington
Department of Ecology.

Web site at <http://www.greenerprospects.com/>. You can also check
