TEDDY BEAR DRIVE

The American College of Health Care Executives Student Chapter at Washington State University Spokane is sponsoring a Teddy Bear Drive for Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery. Students in the Health Policy and Administration Department are members of ACHE and have adopted the Crisis Nursery as their appointed charity for the upcoming holiday season.

Students of Washington State University Spokane and Eastern Washington University Spokane are encouraged to donate new or lovingly used Teddy Bears to children who visit the Crisis Nursery over the holiday season (faculty and staff are invited to participate as well).

Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery is a safe, warm home where families can leave their children for up to 3 days when there is no where else for them to turn in times of crisis or needed respite. The children range in age from 6 months to 5 years.

The Health Policy and Administration Department is a 2-year graduate program dedicated to educating future leaders in the healthcare industry.

You can make a donation to the Teddy Bear Drive in the lobby outside the CALS Library at the Phase 1 Classroom Building beginning November 29 until December 14. Let’s make this a cuddly holiday for a few kids at Vanessa Behan. If you have any questions you can contact Karen Dickson in the HPA Department.

GET TO KNOW WSU SPOKANE

This week’s department overview feature: Speech and Hearing Sciences

The Washington State University Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences offers its graduate program in cooperation with Eastern Washington University’s Department of Communication Disorders.  The cooperative program is named the University Programs in Communication Disorders (UPCD).

The graduate professional education program prepares students to meet the requirements for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Low student/faculty ratio ensures individual attention, close supervision, and academic innovation.

Speech and Hearing Sciences trains students for one of the fastest growing job markets and their programs are ranked among the top graduate and professional programs in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. Faculty are recognized for their work in many areas, including auditory processing disorders, international rehabilitation development, language development and disorders, and multicultural assessment and intervention.

The Department’s Hearing and Speech Clinic provides comprehensive evaluation and therapeutic services to children and adults experiencing speech, language and hearing problems. Master’s students provide clinical services under the direct supervision of nationally certified faculty. A sliding-fee schedule is available. Faculty also supervise students providing clinical services in many community settings, including area public schools, hospitals, rehabilitation institutes, and skilled nursing facilities. Faculty serve leadership roles in the
Washington Speech and Hearing Association and the Washington Board of Hearing and Speech.

What year did the graduate program move from Pullman to Spokane
What professional doctorate degree is the program planning on launching?

See the attached
Fact Sheet to find out if you answered the above questions correctly, and read more interesting information about the program including their plans for the next five years, all in one page!

The UPCD is moving into its new space in the Health Sciences Building next week. The clinic will be open to the public in January.

MEDIA COVERAGE

WSU Spokane
CityLab after school program, Blazing Chicken Ranch Lab, was featured on KAYU-TV Fox 28 ten o’clock news Monday, Dec. 3. Keith Orchard, CityLab camp instructor, was interviewed about the after school program where Grant Elementary fifth and sixth graders volunteered to learn about science by conducting experiments about why Farmer Gooseberry’s famous racing chickens are dying. The students commit themselves to the lab this week, Monday through Thursday from 3:15 to 5:00 pm, to investigate bacteria growth in water and soil, measure Ph levels and discuss importance, study lead in the environment and discuss protocols to find out which chicks are the fastest. Bob Scarfo’s interdisciplinary design studio students gave presentations today on “Urban Centers that Support Health Across Generations,” presenting ideas for urban revitalization for multi-generational populations in a 4-block area of downtown Spokane centering on the intersection of Main & Division. KXLY TV covered the presentations, and a story may be airing tonight at 6pm. The Inlander and the Spokesman-Review also sent reporters; watch for articles. COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

Building an Equitable & Healthy Community Through Diversity
: AHANA Business & Professional Association is proud to host its 1st annual Holiday Potluck Celebration Saturday, December 8, 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., at Providence Hall (northeast of Sacred Heart Medical Center), 20 W Ninth Ave. Feast on diverse food, conversation, and music as we celebrate our members, partners, friends, and community. Bring your favorite dish to share. Bring a can of food or a new toy for those less fortunate; proceeds will go to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Together, Can We "Catalyze" Quality Child Care? Health Improvement Partnership's role is to be the catalyst to make systemic change happen. They bring together a broad array of community partners to imagine new solutions; and, often with new dollars from outside the region, help them implement the solutions they devise. Thanks to a grant from The Paul G. Allen Charitable Foundation, they are working on catalyzing childcare in the region. Today, too many Spokane families--from all backgrounds and income levels--struggle to find quality care for their children. The solutions won't be easy and they must involve everyone--families, business owners, childcare providers, community organizations, and policymakers. Together we can help assure high-quality, accessible, and affordable childcare for all our region's families. To help conceive systemic innovation in childcare HIP is holding a brainstorming meeting to look at how childcare is currently funded and how they can create imaginative strategies that work better. They are especially looking for interested individuals from large and small businesses, healthcare and financial management, and anyone who's interested in how Spokane can be strengthened by improving childcare. To RSVP, or if you're interested but can't make the meeting, contact Karen Seitz for more information and to be added to the Spokane Regional Child Care Initiative mailing list. Call 509-444-3088 ext. 203, or e-mail
karens@hipspokane.org. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 1 to 3 p.m. at the Northeast Community Center, 4001 N. Cook St., Spokane.
