GET TO KNOW WSU SPOKANE
This week’s department overview feature: Health Policy and Administration
Washington State University’s Graduate Program in Health
Policy and Administration (HPA) offers the 50-semester hour Master of Health
Policy and Administration (MHPA) degree. The mission of the Program is to
prepare excellent students nationally interested in healthy communities, and
working students in metropolitan Spokane and the Inland Northwest, for a variety
of professional health services management positions.
WSU Spokane’s HPA
Program is one of only 68 Accrediting Commission on Education for Health
Services Administration- (ACEHSA) accredited health services administration
programs in the US and Canada. The professional distinction of ACEHSA
accreditation for the MHPA program is assurance of both program quality and
assistance in continuous program improvement.
The HPA Program has been
based at the Spokane campus since it became operational in 1994. An average of
30 students are enrolled in the Program each semester.
The
multidisciplinary faculty includes a “national leader” in health finance,
strengths in health law and health care economics, and, the Boeing Distinguished
Professor of Health Policy. Faculty specializations include health economics,
health finance, health and mental health law, management, pharmaceutical
economics, quality management and information systems, mental health services
research, rural health, and ethics.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
Together, Can We "Catalyze" Quality Child Care? Health Improvement Partnership's role is to be the
catalyst to make systemic change happen. They bring together a broad array of
community partners to imagine new solutions; and, often with new dollars from
outside the region, help them implement the solutions they devise. Thanks to a
grant from The Paul G. Allen Charitable Foundation, they are working on
catalyzing childcare in the region. Today, too many Spokane families--from all
backgrounds and income levels--struggle to find quality care for their children.
The solutions won't be easy and they must involve everyone--families, business
owners, childcare providers, community organizations, and policymakers. Together
we can help assure high-quality, accessible, and affordable childcare for all
our region's families. To help conceive systemic innovation in childcare HIP is
holding a brainstorming meeting to look at how childcare is currently funded and
how they can create imaginative strategies that work better. They are especially
looking for interested individuals from large and small businesses, healthcare
and financial management, and anyone who's interested in how Spokane can be
strengthened by improving childcare. To RSVP, or if you're interested but can't
make the meeting, contact Karen Seitz for more information and to be added to
the Spokane Regional Child Care Initiative mailing list. Call 509-444-3088 ext.
203, or e-mail karens@hipspokane.org.
The meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 1 to 3 p.m. at the Northeast
Community Center, 4001 N. Cook St., Spokane.
