TEDDY BEAR DRIVE

The American College of Health Care Executives Student Chapter at Washington State University Spokane is sponsoring a Teddy Bear Drive for Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery. Students in the Health Policy and Administration Department are members of ACHE and have adopted the Crisis Nursery as their appointed charity for the upcoming holiday season.

Students of Washington State University Spokane and Eastern Washington University are encouraged to donate new or lovingly used Teddy Bears to children who visit the Crisis Nursery over the holiday season (faculty and staff are invited to participate as well).

Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery is a safe, warm home where families can leave their children for up to 3 days when there is no where else for them to turn in times of crisis or needed respite. The children range in age from 6 months to 5 years.

The Health Policy and Administration Department is a 2-year graduate program dedicated to educating future leaders in the healthcare industry.

You can make a donation to the Teddy Bear Drive in the lobby outside the CALS Library at the Phase 1 Classroom Building beginning November 29 until December 14. Let’s make this a cuddly holiday for a few kids at Vanessa Behan. If you have any questions you can contact Karen Dickson in the HPA Department.

GET TO KNOW WSU SPOKANE

This week’s department overview feature: Food Science and Human Nutrition

Since 1985 the department of Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) has offered a Master of Science in Human Nutrition and a dietetic internship  (This program is no longer being offered) at WSU Spokane. The graduate program is designed to add depth to the knowledge of dietitians and other health professionals, and to develop research and analytical skills. The internship program is designed for graduate students or persons in the workforce who have already obtained a graduate degree and want the credential of a registered dietitian (RD).

See the attached to find out who can apply for an MS degree, how long it takes to complete the degree and how many full-time students the program has enrolled each year. You will also find out which community hospitals and agencies host dietetic interns and at what level they enter the workforce upon graduation.

The FSHN department is in the process of getting a graduate certificate in Human Nutrition approved by the university. This certificate will focus on nutrition to maintain wellness in family and community settings.  FSHN will be opening a nutrition clinic for the general public sometime in the spring. The clinic will provide dietary analyses and state of the art body composition assessment. Faculty research interests include kidney stones, osteoporosis, eating disorders, sports nutrition, and cultural influences on breastfeeding and food choices.

Visit FSHN’s web page & Meet the Staff
Meet the Food Science and Human Nutrition department, Linda Massey, program coordinator, Janet Beary, internship director and Maddy Houghton, University of Idaho.

NOTE: The Drug Information Center’s complete department overview is attached to this week’s Campus Bulletin in addition to FSHN’s.  The DIC’s department overview was inadvertently left off as an attachment on last week’s Campus Bulletin for some recipients. We apologize for the omission and any inconvenience this may have caused.

MEDIA COVERAGE

The following story was published in the Spokesman-Review Valley Voice on Nov. 22, 2001 (full text not reproduced here; not available online):

Safe Start helps children caught in family violence: A sobbing child tells the 9-1-1 dispatcher that his mommy and daddy are having a fight. There's a yell in the background, the child screams ''Mommy!" and the line goes dead. While police can rush to the scene, stop the fight and make an arrest, sometimes little is done to help ease the emotional trauma suffered by a child who has witnessed domestic violence. But help is on the way for children in the Spokane Valley. A new program got under way this month called Safe Start. It aims to help children through the trauma of screams and punches followed by police sirens and handcuffs. “I can't imagine doing more important work than what you're going to be doing," Chris Blodgett said after the group listened to the taped 9-1-1 call. Blodgett, a clinical psychologist with Washington State University, wrote the Safe Start grant and will administer the project. WSU is coordinating the project and is working with the Spokane County Sheriff's Office, the Spokane Police Department and Casey Family Partners, a nonprofit organization that works with children who have been abused. The goal of Safe Start is to break the cycle of violence, said Blodgett.

The Family Friend Project research being conducted by Melissa Ahern, associate professor, HPA, and Elinor Enz, project coordinator, was the subject of an article in the Spokesman-Review, Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001. Read online: http://www.spokesmanreview.com/news-story.asp?date=112401&ID=s1060909
