ENERGY CONSERVATION UPDATE
Jon Schad, Facilities Manager

It would take a very complex report to record all the variables in order for us to give you a complete picture of the many ways that energy has been conserved on campus since the Governor's mandate was given to all state agencies on January 26, 2001. In order to give you a sample of the savings that everyone is achieving I have listed a few statistics here to encourage you to keep up the good work.

From January/February to February/ March billing period of 2001 the campus consumed 5% less electricity and 29% less natural gas.

In comparison to the same billing period a year ago we consumed 5% less electricity and 7% less natural gas. Temperatures averaged 2 degrees colder this year than in 2000.

Natural gas prices have climbed by 48% this year for the campus.  Electricity has fallen from 0.0419 per kilowatt to 0.0393 per kilowatt.  It is expected that cost for both gas and electricity will continue to climb this year.  It is our hope that we can continue to pull together to save energy and our operating dollars for other university needs.

NOTEWORTHY

Darlene Septelka, assistant professor, construction management, and coordinator of the graduate program in design-build management (M.S. Arch.),

The Associated General Contractors Washington Education Foundation will be issuing a $5,500 grant for a thesis study proposed by Leandra Thompson, a MS Arch Design-Build Management Graduate Student. The topic of study revolves around alternative project delivery methods and the new leadership models required to successfully manage innovative design and construction. We are particularly interested in what makes a successful project manager.  Leandra's research will investigate the relationships between formal project management training (hard skills) and the informal leadership techniques gained thorough experience (soft skills).  The study will also research and investigate individual leadership models and compare and contrast them with team based leadership models. Besides her thesis a white paper on the study and presentation to AGC in Seattle will be required.

Steve Setter, assistant professor, pharmacy practice, has been selected to attend an Alzheimer's dementia traineeship sponsored by the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists in June, and a similar traineeship on Parkinson's disease in October. Each traineeship is a week long and Setter will be working in a hands-on environment with national leaders in each area of neurology.
