Medical Emergencies
When you observe a person who appears to be seriously ill or injured:
- Call 911, and then notify Campus Safety/Security at 509.358.7995.
- Do not touch the accident site. Campus Safety/Security or the Police Department may need to investigate.
- Personnel certified in first aid will respond and determine if first aid or additional treatment is necessary.
- After emergency personnel are called, send someone to the entrance of the building to meet the emergency personnel and guide them to the ill or injured person.
- Unless it is a life-threatening situation or you are trained in first aid, do not attempt to provide any first aid by yourself before personnel certified in first aid arrive.
- Do not attempt to move a person who has fallen and who appears to be in pain.
- Avoid unnecessary conversation with or about the ill or injured person or members of his or her party. You might increase the person's distress or fears and thereby contribute to medical shock. Limit your communication to quiet reassurances.
- Do not discuss the possible cause of an accident or any conditions that may have contributed to the cause. Do not spread rumors.
- After the person's needs have been taken care of and the incident is concluded, remain on-site to assist the investigating Campus Security personnel or supervisor with pertinent information for the report.
- See biohazards procedures.
- Fill out an Incident Report form (S25.20.7) and forward it, within 24 hours, as directed. Obtain the report online or by calling 509.358.7994.
- Immediately report accidents that result in death, serious injury (e.g., fracture, amputation) or in-patient hospitalization of WSU personnel or third parties. (See S25.20.2 for more about third parties.)
- Do not touch the accident site. Environmental Health and Safety or the Police Department may need to investigate. This applies to all personnel at the Riverpoint Campus, including WSU Spokane, EWU, Sirti, and Sirti tenants.
