Safety and Security

Biohazards

Biohazardous agents are bacteria, viruses, or parasites that cause disease. On campus, most biologically hazardous materials will be body fluids such as blood, vomit, or semen.

1. If human blood or body fluids are encountered, DO NOT CLEAN THEM UP.

2. Contact your supervisor and Campus Safety/Security at 509.358.7995. See below for procedures.

3. Secure the area to the best of your ability without touching anything contaminated. A trained staff member from Campus Safety/Security or Facilities Operations will assess the need for clean up.

4. If direct skin contact with blood or body fluids does occur, immediately wash the affected skin with hot water and soap and report it to your supervisor.

5. Campus personnel who injure themselves and cause a blood spill should clean up the spill by themselves, if possible, with a 10% bleach solution.

6. Procedures: Prior to calling, determine how large the spill area is.

7. Fill out an Incident Report form (S25.20.7) and forward it, within 24 hours, as directed. Obtain the report online or by calling 509.358.7994.

8. Immediately report accidents that result in death, serious injury (e.g., fracture, amputation) or in-patient hospitalization of WSU personnel or third parties. This applies to all personnel at the Riverpoint Campus, including WSU Spokane, EWU, Sirti, and Sirti tenants.
