Professional Certificate Program

Professional certification for teachers program

WSU Spokane is now offering a Professional Certificate Program (PCP) for teachers who currently hold a Residency Certificate or who wish to improve their classroom techniques and explore personal growth opportunities. The PCP is offered with or without the option of a Master of Education (Ed.M.) in Curriculum and Instruction, and/or an endorsement in ELL or Special Education through our distance degree program (DDP).

Program components

Pre-assessment seminar (T&L 541, 3 credits)

Teachers reflect upon their practice, identify a professional growth team, pre-assess their strengths, and prepare an initial draft of a professional growth plan. By the end of the course, teachers will complete pre-assessment plans for areas of professional growth based upon a reflective analysis of their practice.

Culminating seminar  (T&L 543, 3 credits)

Teachers refine and synthesize the evidence and supporting documents in their portfolios. The seminar concludes with candidates presenting parts of their portfolios. Successful candidates are eligible for professional certification from OSPI.

ProCert as component of master’s degree

Coursework from the Professional Certification Program may be applied to the Master of Education (Ed.M.) program of study at WSU Spokane. Further, students may complete master's and pro cert requirements by taking online courses offered for the ELL or Special Education endorsement programs.

Three application options available on the Spokane campus

Teacher ProCert for University Credit

Teachers may take the ProCert program for university credit, as part of a master’s
degree program or merely for advancement on their district salary schedule.
Graduate applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible; there are
several steps to the admission process.

• First, you must apply to the WSU Graduate School for acceptance to the university. (If you are not seeking a master’s degree, you may apply as an “undecided graduate,” which provides an abbreviated process.)

• Second, you must submit the departmental application form.

• Third, if you are pursuing a master’s degree program, you must apply to the department for acceptance into the master’s degree program.
