Collaborative, community learning
The Design Institute offers an opportunity for each of the participating programs to reinforce individual disciplinary knowledge and skills, while developing an interdisciplinary depth of understanding. This innovative approach advances knowledge in design and construction, while it contributes to the evolution of the disciplines.
The Design Institute also offers one of only two Doctor of Design programs in the country, addressing a demonstrated void in design education by specifically bridging education, research, and practice within a philosophical and pedagogical framework of interdisciplinary inquiry and critical synthesis.
Service learning at its best
As they solve challenges together—often on projects that directly serve local communities—students develop an enlarged understanding of the things that shape the quality of urban life. Past efforts include proposing design concepts for historic downtown revitalization and creating green homes through Habitat For Humanity.
Such distinctive educational experiences provide students with the competitive edge demanded by a dynamic marketplace.
