Program Overview Washington State University Spokane offers the only research-based Exercise Science graduate program in the state of Washington that focuses on clinical and experimental exercise physiology with an emphasis on cellular and molecular mechanisms. The core curriculum is designed to provide a foundation in the study of the cellular mechanisms that regulate physiological responses to exercise and the molecular mechanisms that govern these cellular responses. Research methods and statistics courses provide preparatory study in research design and analysis for future project/thesis work. Students
may choose from a thesis or non-thesis option. The thesis option will provide research training in exercise physiology with emphasis in either
cellular physiology or
clinical physiology. The
thesis option will also serve as preparation for students who plan to continue
their education in a doctoral program. Located in Spokane, Washington, the largest tertiary medical center between Seattle, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Salt Lake City, the program provides students opportunities to work with clinical populations and to interface with other allied health fields. Thirteen hospitals and medical centers are located in the area, providing access to a large clinical base. The program is housed in the new 144,000-square-foot Health Sciences Building located on the Riverpoint campus, featuring state-of-the-art laboratory and clinical space. The Riverpoint campus lies along the picturesque Centennial Trail bordering the Spokane River and connecting the campus with the vibrant downtown area.
