Current
Research
I am interested in the
stress-related effects of exercise and its impact on immune function. We
recently completed a funded study on the effects of glutamine supplementation on
salivary and nasal IgA in runners who experience over-reaching during training.
Salivary IgA concentration, output, and salivary IgA:total protein were not
changed by training or supplementation. However, glutamine supplementation
attenuated the decline in nasal IgA with training. These findings are
particularly interesting because upper respiratory infections, which
predominately invade the body through the nasal passages, are frequently
attributed to over-reaching and over-training.
I am also initiating
funded research, in collaboration with colleagues in the College of Nursing and
the Pharmacology/Toxicology Graduate Program, on biobehavioral complementary
intervention for women living with stable breast cancer. We are examining the
role of complementary interventions on psychosocial, quality of life, and immune
outcomes. By providing mind-body group support interventions to women living
with stable breast cancer, we will examine psychological stress, perceived
support, and quality of life as correlates of immune indices.
