If you are interested in applying, or would like more information about our program, we invite you to contact us. Program staff and faculty are available to answer questions and provide advising on the admissions process. Campus and departmental tours can be arranged.

Applicants must submit application materials to both the Washington State University Graduate School and the Department of Criminal Justice. Admission standards conform to the requirements of the WSU Graduate School.

Admission Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent;
  • An undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 from the last 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) or a graduate GPA of at least 3.30 for 12 semester credit hours at a recognized graduate school;
  • Satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE);
  • For students entering from a foreign university, evidence of English proficiency (i.e., Test of English as a Foreign Language) and financial resources.

Application Procedures

Application and supporting materials should be submitted by May 1st (for summer or fall enrollment) or September 1st (for spring enrollment) to ensure priority consideration. You will receive email confirmation from the Department immediately upon receipt of each item submitted as part of your application. The program offers rolling admission; your application will be reviewed and the admission decision made immediately upon receipt of all application materials.

A complete file contains

  • A complete application, including $35 application fee, submitted to the WSU Graduate School. Save postage and apply on-line—be sure to indicate "Spokane campus" on your application form.
  • A letter of intent and introduction, outlining areas of interest in Criminal Justice, career objectives, and any academic or professional experiences that recommend the applicant. This should be sent directly to the Criminal Justice program.
  • Three original letters of recommendation and/or recommendation forms from persons qualified to speak to the student's academic qualifications and potential. These letters are used to help assess the quality of the applicant’s academic and work experiences. These should be sent directly to the Criminal Justice program.
  • Official copies of college or university transcripts (including all colleges or universities from which you have earned or expect to earn a degree, and all colleges or universities at which you have taken graduate level course work; transcripts for coursework taken at Washington State University are not required). These should be submitted both to the WSU Graduate School and the Criminal Justice program. Official transcripts are those mailed directly from the registrar of the institution(s) you attended.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores submitted to WSU. Scores must be less than five years old.
    • When taking the GRE, indicate Washington State University as a score recipient. WSU school code is 4705; there is no department code. If you did not indicate WSU when you took the test, you will need to contact ETS to request a score report be sent to WSU. To request additional GRE score reports, call: 1.888.473.7267.
  • Official TOEFL score (for international applicants)
    • In the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, or Canada: 1.888.863.3544. Outside these areas: 609.771.7267. www.toefl.org
