If you are motivated by a desire to affect and manage change for the common good, this degree will be of interest to you. The BA in Professional Development is an interdisciplinary, liberal arts degree anchored in the social and behavioral sciences. The curriculum empowers you to lead effectively in professional careers that are continuously evolving due to social, cultural, technological, and demographic change.

The Professional Development degree prepares you to take advantage of leadership opportunities in a wide variety are career options, including those in:  

  • human resources/social services

  • business and industry

  • public or government administration

  • nonprofit management

  • communications, marketing, or public relations

You can also use the degree to prepare for graduate and professional programs, including business, criminal justice, education, gerontology, health policy administration, human development, law, psychology, social work, and sociology.

Get Real Experience

Students gain practical experience by completing a supervised internship in a professional setting related to individual career interests. This hands-on application of classroom concepts prepares you for the competitive marketplace and brings your knowledge to life.

The core curriculum focuses on leadership, oral and written communication, and study in the social and behavioral sciences (sociology, psychology, human development); all of which are intended to prepare you to lead effectively in professional settings that are continuously changing due to social, cultural, technological, and demographic change. The leadership courses are taught from a liberal arts and humanities perspective, and include such topics as: 

  • Defining self in terms of leadership, including renewing and vitalizing oneself and one’s abilities
  • Counterfeit versus authentic leadership, and the role of authenticity in leadership
  • Leadership by ordinary people in the real world
  • The role of credibility in leadership
  • Leadership as raising levels of trust, conflict resolution, and achieving workable unity
  • Leadership as affirming ideas, encouraging positive values, and motivating others
  • Leadership as responsible citizenship

Program Requirements

The BA in Professional Development is a bachelor’s completion degree requiring a minimum of 120 semester credits for graduation. Upper-division junior/senior-level courses are offered at WSU Spokane. Before enrolling in the program, students must complete at least 60 semester credit hours of freshman/sophomore college course requirements with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher at another Washington State University campus, Spokane Falls Community College, Spokane Community College, or other accredited higher education institutions.

To prepare for the degree, students should be grounded in lower-division subject matter the liberal arts and humanities, including courses in the social and behavioral sciences (e.g. sociology, psychology, and human development).  Prior to entering this degree program, students are STRONGLY encouraged to take as much coursework as possible aimed at enhancing written and verbal communication skills. Some coursework in a foreign language is also required.

Class Schedule

Students may attend full-time or part-time, and may begin their upper-division studies fall or spring semester.
