About WWAMI
How It Works
Each of the participating states designates a specific number of medical school seats:
- University of Alaska Anchorage: 20
- University of Idaho: 20
- Washington State University Pullman: 20
- Montana State University: 20
- University of Wyoming: 20
Appropriated state funds and student tuition combine to cover the full cost of this education. The tuition paid by students in Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho is the same as that paid by Washington State residents—allowing for publicly supported medical education in states where no freestanding medical school exists.
History & Philosophy
In recent years, medical educators have gained an understanding that students need to learn medicine where it is practiced—in the community. Through WWAMI, students spend a significant part of their education working in regional communities.
Mission
WWAMI is dedicated to improving the health of the public. We place special emphasis on the following:
- Meeting health care needs for our region and recognizing the importance of primary care.
- Making public medical education accessible to residents in the five-state region.
- Influencing physicians to choose careers in primary care medicine and locate their practices in non-metropolitan areas of Northwest.
