Interior Design
Offered by the Department of Interior Design, the interior design program is based on a concern for human beings and the creation of interior settings that support human activities and values. Graduates are able to think creatively, solving problems with professional competence.
The Master of Arts program offers one of the few three-year tracks available nationwide--catering to individuals possessing a bachelor's degree in something other than design.
The Bachelor of Arts program at Washington State University is the only four-year baccalaureate program in Washington accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation.
In early 2009, Design Intelligence ranked the graduate program ninth best program among all of America's interior design programs.
- The Master of Arts program combines studio design experiences with qualitative and quantitative research to explore human behavior vis-à-vis interior environments, examine design theories, and experiment in design technology.
- The MA degree requires a minimum of 30 credits, including the completion of a research thesis or project, and is offered in a two-year and a three-year option.
BA in Interior Design
Our program offers a balanced approach in interior design with exposure to art, architecture, and humanities. Both community college and WSU Pullman students have the opportunity to complete their bachelors degree in the Design Institute’s collaborative studio environment.
- WSU Pullman students spend their third and fourth years at the Design Institute.
- Students from Spokane Falls Community College and Bellevue College spend their fourth year at the Design Institute.
Laptop Computer Requirements
As stated in the University Catalog, "All students are required to have a personal laptop computer prior to enrollment in upper-division studio courses."
PC: Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon, 3.0 GHz or greater; Windows XP, SP2 or Vista; 1-4 GBs of RAM; 1280x1024 monitor and display adaptor capable of 24-bit color.
MAC: MacBook or MacBook Pro; Boot Camp software (allows Mac to boot up either as a Mac or Windows machine. This is necessary as Mac's do not run AutoCAD without this software. Copy of XP or Vista, required). Additional RAM, install to full capacity.
Articulated BA/MA (4+1) Option
- Qualified students may choose to enter this program within their senior year in WSU's interior design program, which leads to a master's degree completed in the first year of graduate study.
- The BA/MA degree is non-thesis; the culmination of the degree is a design project, completed in consultation with their assigned graduate committee.
